In God We Trust

Our Country’s motto has been imprinted on our dollar bills since the year 1957. But where did the U. S. Congress first get this idea way back in 1864 to make our nation’s motto “In God We Trust” and to have it imprinted on our money? Where did the concept come from? Most of us Christians know that it basically is taken from a Bible verse.

One of my favorite Christian choruses that we learned over 60 years ago was taken from the these verses in Psalms 20:6-8: “Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear  him from his holy Heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.” (AKJV)

“The primary portion of the song is verse 7, ‘Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.’  This drives into our hearts the revelation that we must look to our Lord God first for our provision, strength, and defense. Our country would do well to remember this today for  ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman walks but in vain’ ~~ Psalms 127:1.”  ~~ Dutch Sheets (edited)
