How to Hear God’s Voice

Today we are bombarded by noise, activity, motion, and media. How can we as Christians hear from the Lord with all this going on?  We may pray and seek God, but do we take time to listen? The prophet Elijah needed direction from the Lord. First Kings 19 tells the story. He went up to Mount Horeb, and there he experienced God’s presence not in the mighty displays of nature like wind, fire, or earthquakes, but in a “still small voice, a gentle whisper.” This quiet voice spoke to Elijah revealing God’s plan and purpose for him. Humbled by this experience, Elijah listened intently to the whisper and obeyed God’s instructions. We must do the same. . . Get quiet before the Lord, and truly listen to Him speak to our inner man. Then he was told, “Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by.”

A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before him, but God wasn’t to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn’t in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn’t in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper. When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there. A quiet voice asked, “So Elijah, now tell me, what are you doing here?” Elijah said it again, “I’ve been working my heart out for You God.” ~~ 1 Kings 19:11-13. (MSG).
