What Does OIL Represent?

Many think that the oil in the lamps of the wise and foolish virgins in Matthew 25 refers to the type of oil that burns. However, the Old Testament scriptures reveal that the Word of God is a Lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

So the OlL the wise virgins had that enabled God to KNOW them was His Word in their hearts and lives. God will say to those without His Word in them, “I never KNEW you.”

It is even generally believed that the oil represents the Holy Spirit; and although this is true, keep in mind that our lives (lamps) also should be full of the Word of God. We hide God’s Word in our hearts so that we do not sin against Him ~~ Psalms 119:11).

Without the Word we don’t really know God, nor does He know us.

So the oil of the Spirit really is God’s Word! In the parable of the Virgins Awaiting the Bridegroom our lives are the LAMPS. Having God’s Word gives us faith (for faith comes by hearing the Word), and our testimony is that the Holy Spirit produces in us good works, purity, and a life of dedication to God. Thus we are enabled by the Spirit to maintain fellowship with God and keep our part of His covenant with us as believers.

“Your word is like a lamp that guides my steps, a light that shows the path I should take” ~~ Psalms 119:105.

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” ~~ 1 John 1:5.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” ~~ Psalms 27:1.

“Jesus said, ‘I Am the Light of the world’” ~~ John 8:12.
