What My Parents Instilled in Me

Fortunately my brother and I had Christian parents who trained us up in the ways of the Lord.  Having received Jesus as young boys, we recognized the difference between our lifestyle and so many of the other kids in the neighborhood. Not that we were better than them, since all of us were exposed to the same temptations.

But as our parents (as elders) shared from the Word, we learned we could think for ourselves, recall biblical admonitions, and make wise choices. Hence neither of us boys ever smoked or drank or participated in illicit sex at all. Praise God! (Drugs was not a thing in the 50’s).

My mother especially taught us the phrase  “others may, you cannot.” Have you ever heard that instruction?

“Exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” ~~ Hebrews 3:13.

“…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is— His good, pleasing and perfect will” ~~ Romans 12:1b-2.

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” ~~ Deuteronomy 6:7.

“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” ~~ Psalms 78:4.
