Modern culture wants another Jesus, a false jesus —one that says “love everyone, there is no sin, find your own spirituality and truth, you’ll be just fine,…and we all go to heaven.” But we need to compare the real, genuine Gospel in order to better see the false.
Universalism twists the gospel presenting a jesus who doesn’t cause us to stop sinning. It says you don’t have to change because Jesus loves you just as you are. It says Jesus suffered so you don’t have to – SO have a prosperous life in every way. A false gospel would say, as long as you are spiritual, you are okay, for Christ is in you, and that’s enough.
The real gospel is about laying down our lives for Christ and for others. The real Gospel is giving up our life to become more like Him. The real Gospel doesn’t ask what Jesus can do for me, but rather, how may I serve Jesus? The false gospel adds Him to our lives… asking them to figure out where they can fit Jesus into their busy lives…maybe an hour on Sunday…maybe saying a prayer once as a child, but then going on with their lives not even thinking about God. False teachers are money hungry, they manipulate and control; they take advantage of people and even insult them – and Paul writes, “you gladly believe what they say, not realizing you’ve been seduced away from the true Jesus, the true Spirit, the true gospel.”
But that is not us. So let’s reaffirm that we believe and receive the simplicity of the True Gospel — the Good News — the clear and fundamental message that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again. He offers salvation and a relationship with God through our faith alone, not by any human effort. It’s an enabling to live an authentic life centered on Christ, being filled with His Spirit, reading and knowing His Word, and making disciples.
