God Whispers; but Are We Listening?

As illustrated in the biblical story of the prophet Elijah, who heard God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a “gentle whisper” or “still small voice,” the whisper of God is an invitation to intimacy that offers us clarity, peace, wisdom, and guidance amidst the noise of our daily lives. Hearing His whisper requires us to be in proximity to Him. We need to “draw near.” We can’t hear Him when we are busy. We must listen intently.

So, draw near to God while making decisions. Yes, He speaks through His Word, and He speaks through His creation; but it is always just that “still small voice.”

What blocks us from hearing His whisper? God is a gentleman. He won’t push His way into our lives.

Clutter, noise, and the barrage relentless info on the media all make it impossible to hear God’s voice. We need to be in proximity to God having a posture of prayer and quietness.

The static, conflicts, bitterness, compromises, even cynicism or our pride ALL BLOCK communication with our Creator. And, of course, it is so hard to hear God speak if we are living in known sin. So, He waits for us until we are listening for His voice.

Don’t expect God to rubber stamp your plans… ask Him about the situation or circumstance. If you are hearing from God only when you want to hear: maybe one hour a week on Sunday, or even less frequently, SEEK HIM!  ASK GOD … “What do You want me to do? How should I answer or respond?” Ask God to give you discernment. And every day, have a listening ear. Then He will speak.
