Under the Old Covenant, the Lord required physical circumcision. “From generation to generation, every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth“ ~~ Genesis 17:12.
Under God’s New Covenant with us, the Apostle Paul wrote “When you came to Christ, you were ‘circumcised,’ but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision— the cutting away of your sinful nature. For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead” ~~ Colossians 2:11-12.
Circumcision of the heart is actually done by God’s Holy Spirit as He removes our pride, idolatry, stubbornness, hard heartedness and anything else that prevents a full relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ as mentioned in Deuteronomy 10:16: “So cut away the thick calluses from your heart and stop being so willfully hardheaded” ~~ (MSG).
