The final words of Jesus Christ before He ascended into heaven were His instructions to His people:
“Jesus came and told His disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age’” ~~ Matthew 25:5-20.
Yet, we don’t hear much about making disciples. We hear about the new birth and water baptism. But once we learn Jesus’ command to make disciples, we may wonder “Where do we start?”
Just give Jesus your “YES” — your willingness to obey His command — and He will help you… He will disciple others through you. I am not suggesting that you mentor a person for a lifetime. Disciple a new believer just for a season.
Now, I’m not talking about discipleship. Discipleship is the process of learning and following Jesus’ teachings that produces spiritual growth and commitment to Christian principles. Discipleship usually involves activities like studying the Bible, prayer, worship, and Christian fellowship.
Making a disciple of Jesus, on the other hand, focuses specifically on a mature Christian guiding a new believer on the personal journey to become a disciple for themselves. This includes evangelism, teaching, mentoring, and nurturing the new believer in the faith, helping them to adopt Jesus’ teachings and principles of loving God and loving others.
“Jesus said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation’” ~~ Mark 16:15.
“And repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in His Name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem” ~~ Luke 24:47.
Make disciples!
