What Is Intercession?

To intercede means to  “go between.” Therefore, intercessors stand in prayer on behalf of others before God. While Jesus alone mediates for us at the Father’s right hand, we are called to represent His work through prayer. Intercession isn’t only reaching upward to God; it’s also standing in the gap against the powers of darkness. It involves both connecting people to God’s blessings and breaking the enemy’s influence over their lives.

Jesus Christ accomplished this for us through redemption. We enforce this for others through prayer: we petition the Father and stand on Jesus’ victory. As Scripture urges, we are to pray, intercede, and give thanks for all people (1 Timothy 2:1). Even when we don’t know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes through us. And we are grateful that Jesus continually intercedes for us (Romans 8:26, 34).

Like the watchman in Ezekiel, we are called to stand in the gap — to build up the wall and intercede for others (Ezekiel 22:30).  And like Paul, we pray that others become strengthened by the Spirit, rooted in love, and filled with the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:14–19).
