In the sacrament of Holy Communion, how often do we participate in this “Eucharist” without pausing to consider its purpose and power? Even more serious, what happens if someone partakes in an unworthy manner?
Holy Communion is a sacred moment for believers to renew their faith, receive God’s grace, and deepen their union with Jesus Christ. The bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ—what Catholics call the Real Presence. Through this holy sacrament we remember Christ’s suffering and sacrificial death, and we partake in His life.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life… For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:33, 35). He also declared, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”
What a glorious promise. Yet the Apostle Paul also gives a solemn warning: “Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord… For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the Lord’s body eats and drinks judgment on himself” ~~ 1 Corinthians 11:27–29.
Therefore, Communion calls us to self-examination with gratitude for Jesus’ sacrificial death. When we come to the Lord’s table, let us come humbly repenting from sin and fully relying on Jesus Christ to save and heal us.
