Are We A Christian Nation?

John Wesley served as an Anglican minister. Here are his thoughts regarding “Are We a Christian Nation?”

Before we answer too quickly, consider this: what actually defines a Christian nation?

John Wesley asked, therefore: “Where do we see a people truly filled with the Spirit, walking in love, unity, humility, and mercy… where no one lacks because others freely give? A people who live like Christ in word and deed?”

By that standard, he said: “No nation on earth has ever qualified.” America has certainly been influenced by Christianity. But influence is not the same as transformation. The truth is, God never called our country to be His holy nation (like He did Israel) — He called His people; therefore His Church carries that identity, not a government.

So the real question isn’t, “Is America a Christian nation?”

It’s this: Are we living as Christians? Because Christianity was never meant to be a label on a nation — it’s a life revealed through a people.
