Money and ministry don’t always mix well in people’s minds. Many have become jaded by seeing some ministers grow wealthy from the offerings of others.
I rarely ask people for money, even though Jesus said, “The laborer is worthy of his wages” (Luke 10:7). Instead, I have trusted Christ in people to give from the inside out— not because an offering basket was placed under their nose.
It is wrong to use the influence God gives for the Gospel as a means of personal gain. Even the Apostle Paul worked as a tentmaker. This occupation allowed him to support himself while he preached the Gospel. (Acts 18:3) Yet he never presented this as the ideal. He consistently taught that supporting those who minister is both biblical and healthy.
Throughout my 55 years of ministry, getting rich has never been a goal. Success is not measured by bank accounts or possessions. And through it all, the Lord has remained faithful.
