Jacob’s Name Change

Most of us will remember the Bible story of Jacob (the deceiver) wrestling with God all night. And at the end of the struggle where Jacob wouldn’t let go of God unless God blessed him, God changed his name to Israel (one who struggles with God and prevails). And the outcome was that Jacob also had a limp from that day on that reminded him of his struggle. And the victories “Israel” experienced from that point forward were not through strength and human power, but came through submission to God. What has been true for Jacob / Israel is true for us — when our name is changed by God. We are now new creations in Christ — sons of God and fully dependent on Him as long as we abide in the Lord and His power and His authority in our lives.

God gave him the new name: “Because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome … or prevailed or gained the victory” (Genesis 32:28-30).

This is such an applicable teaching to our own lives as Christians.
